New kid in town: 25hours hotel “Altes Hafenamt”

Hamburg is always worth a visit and who wants to spend the night in historic walls in the middle of the modern harbor city should make a reservation for the new 25hours hotel “Altes Hafenamt” – Old Port Authority. Wellness is also available – with views of the entire harbor!

The new harbor city, the warehouse district called Speicherstadt, nice beaches at the river Elbe and the famous piers “Landungsbrücken” – Hamburg has always been one of my favorite cities. This weekend we checked out the new 25hours Hotel “Altes Hafenamt” at the Osakaallee – the perfect base for exploring the port of Hamburg.

Historical brick building

The HafenCity is known for its modern office and commercial buildings, but between the tall buildings is a relic of former times. In the listed brick building of the former office of port and power today the 25hours Hotel Altes Hafenamt welcomes its guests. The 49 rooms have been adapted to the individual floor plan and are available in sizes M (25 square meters), L (35 square meters) and XL (45 square meters). Common to all is definitely the maritime atmosphere and our room no. 144 also comes with numerous relics from shipping.

Homely parlors

The king-size bed welcomed us with the hotel mascot, the 25hours sleeping sheep that somewhat reminds me of the sleeping monkey from the 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin.

In front of the bed is a comfortable sofa with maritime pillows, the coffee table seems to float above an anchor chain. Who needs to work, finds a desk and plenty of storage space in the large shelf on which again a lot of sailor stuff can be found. From glowing globes to maritime readings. For music there is a Bluetooth speaker and a Smart TV.
Thirsty guests find typical drinks from Hamburg in the mini bar; free coffee is served by a Nespresso machine with a small capsule selection. Also organic tea is available at the room. The bathroom is very spacious and comes with a large, walk-in rainforest shower, a make-up mirror and a separate toilet. Sinks and taps still remind me of the past of the house.

Shakshuka for breakfast

After a long night in the city of Hamburg with nightcap in the hotel’s bar Boilerman we are glad that the hotel serves breakfast until 12pm. In the hotel restaurant Neni Eastern Mediterranean is served all day and also for breakfast Shakshuka is recommended to us, a tasty stew of tomatoes and peppers with egg.

The weather is perfect so we choose to sit outside on the terrace and enjoy fresh rolls with a variety of home-made spreads, fruit, yogurt, cereal, salmon and other fish. Who enjoys breakfast indoors makes itself comfortable in the living area on large leather sofas or at the tables opposite the open kitchen. Not only the rooms, but also the restaurant is full of maritime elements.

Walking through Hamburg

25hours “Altes Hafenamt” is located in the HafenCity at the Osakaallee. A nice walk leads along the modern buildings to the Elbphilharmonie (it is still under construction) over to the historic warehouse district, a UNESCO World Heritage since 2015.

From here you can easy continue to the busy jetties called “Landungsbrücken”. From here the countless boots start for harbor cruises and the ferry to Finkenwerder stops here regularly. Fish restaurants serve the typical hamburger Pannfisch (a fish out of the pan) and other specialties, in the bars a mix of beer and lemonade is served.
When it rains, the Maritime Museum opposite the hotel is really worth a trip. On ten floors the history of maritime navigation with numerous models, exciting films and exhibits from the historical captain orders to full cabins of the luxury sailing ship Sea Cloud II will be explained. Families should pay the “Miniatur Wunderland” a visit: With a length of about 15 kilometers, it is the largest model railway in the world and shows excerpts from Las Vegas via Switzerland to complete airports.

Port sauna with panoramic view

After a long day in the metropolis it is time for visiting a spa. 25hours Hotel “Altes Hafenamt” is adjacent to the 25hours Hotel HafenCity and guests of both accommodations can relax in the sauna of the HafenCity hotel. On the sixth floor there is a spa area with a sauna, which the designers integrated in an old shipping container.

Sweating guests look through a window in the sauna on the HafenCity. Who is relaxing on the comfortable couches, overlooks the harbor and the Cruise Terminal Hamburg and while we cool down from the sauna the Prinsendam of the Holland-America-Line stops there.

Who wants to be active, should visit the fully equipped gym in 25hours “Altes Hafenamt” or cycle with one of the hotel bikes across the city. These are – as long as available – awarded free of charge to guests. We made a bike tour on Sunday morning at half past five to the famous fish market, which is reached from the hotel in less than ten minutes.
